VyprVPN L2TP/IPsec VPN Setup for Windows 8 RT

VyprVPN Free accounts are limited to using our Desktop, and Mobile applications to connect to our VPN service. Please see "What is VyprVPN Free?" for more information.

Note: Bold items are things you will click, tap, or type

The setup process involves three basic steps:

  • Adding a registry setting
  • Installing a VPN certificate
  • Configuring a connection profile

Once you have completed the setup, follow the instructions for connecting and disconnecting from VyprVPN.

    Swipe to the left on far left side of the desktop (or point your mouse to the top-right corner) to access the Charms menu.

    Type regedit into the search bar at the top-right.

    Click or tap regedit on the left in the search results.

    In the left pane, locate and click or tap the folder named: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

    Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\PolicyAgent

    Click or tap the Edit menu and hover your cursor over (or tap) New. Click or tap DWORD Value.

    A new registry will appear in the right pane, named New Value #1.

    Rename that file: "AssumeUDPEncapsulationContextOnSendRule" (this is case-sensitive and contains no spaces) and press ENTER.

    Right-click AssumeUDPEncapsulationContextOnSendRule, then click or tap Modify. Or, double-tap AssumeUDPEncapsulationContextOnSendRule to open the Modify window.

    In the Value data box, type "2" and click or tap OK. Reboot the computer.

How to add the registry setting:

  1. Swipe to the left on far left side of the desktop (or point your mouse to the top-right corner) to access the Charms menu.
  2. Type regedit into the search bar at the top-right.
  3. Click or tap regedit on the left in the search results.
  4. If you receive a "User Account Control" pop-up asking you to allow changes, please click or tap Yes.
  5. In the left pane, locate and click or tap the folder named: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\PolicyAgent
  6. Click or tap the Edit menu and hover your cursor over (or tap) New. Click or tap DWORD Value.
  7. A new registry will appear in the right pane, named New Value #1.
  8. Rename that file: "AssumeUDPEncapsulationContextOnSendRule" (this is case-sensitive and contains no spaces) and press ENTER.
  9. Right-click AssumeUDPEncapsulationContextOnSendRule, then click or tap Modify. Or, double-tap AssumeUDPEncapsulationContextOnSendRule to open the Modify window.
  10. In the Value data box, type "2" and click or tap OK.
  11. Reboot the computer.

    Click or tap the File menu then click or tap Add/Remove Snap-in.

    In the "Available snap-ins" list on the left, double-click (or double-tap) Certificates.

    In the popup window, select Computer account, then click Next.

    Click Finish.

    Click or tap OK to close the Snap-ins window.

    In the center pane of the console window, double-click (or double-tap) Certificates (Local Computer).

    Double-click (or double-tap) Personal.

    Click or tap Action in the menu at the top, then hover over or tap All Tasks, then click or tap Import...

    Navigate to the folder that the certificate was downloaded to. Access the file type selector at the bottom-right and click or tap Personal Information Exchange.

    Highlight the goldenfrog-client file and then click or tap Open.

    Click or tap Next on the Certificate Import Wizard.

    Type "goldenfrog" in the Password field, then click or tap Next.

    Select Automatically select the certificate store based on the type of certificate, click or tap Next.

    Click or tap Finish, you should see a pop-up window that says "The import was successful", then click or tap OK.

    Close the Console1 window using the X in the top-right corner.

    Click or tap Yes to save Console1 settings.

    The default name is fine, click or tap Save.

To install the certificate:

  1. Download the certificate and save it.
  2. Swipe to the left on far left side of the desktop (or point your mouse to the top-right corner) to access the Charms menu.
  3. Type mmc into the search bar at the top-right.
  4. Click or tap mmc on the left in the search results.
  5. If you receive a "User Account Control" pop-up asking you to allow changes, please click or tap Yes.
  6. Click or tap the File menu then click or tap Add/Remove Snap-in.
  7. In the "Available snap-ins" list on the left, double-click (or double-tap) Certificates.
  8. In the popup window, select Computer account, click Next, then click Finish.
  9. Click or tap OK to close the Snap-ins window.
  10. In the center pane of the console window, double-click (or double-tap) Certificates (Local Computer).
  11. Double-click (or double-tap) Personal.
  12. Click or tap Action in the menu at the top, then hover over or tap All Tasks, then click or tap Import...
  13. Click or tap Next, then click or tap Browse...
  14. Navigate to the folder that the certificate was downloaded to.
  15. Access the file type selector at the bottom-right and click or tap Personal Information Exchange.
  16. Highlight the goldenfrog-client file and then click or tap Open.
  17. Click or tap Next on the Certificate Import Wizard.
  18. Type "goldenfrog" in the Password field, then click or tap Next.
  19. Select Automatically select the certificate store based on the type of certificate, click or tap Next.
  20. Click or tap Finish, you should see a pop-up window that says "The import was successful", then click or tap OK.
  21. Close the Console1 window using the X in the top-right corner.
  22. Click or tap Yes to save Console1 settings.

    Click or tap Connect to a workplace, then click or tap Next.

    Ensure that No, create a new connection is selected, then click or tap Next.

    Click or tap Use my Internet Connection (VPN).

    Enter the desired VPN server address in the Internet address field. View the server addresses here.

    In the Destination name field, type VyprVPN, then click or tap Create.

    Click or tap Change adapter settings on the left.

    Right-click (or long tap) the new VyprVPN connection and click or tap Properties.

    Click or tap the Security tab in the VyprVPN Properties pop-up window.

    In the Type of VPN menu, select Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol with IPsec (L2TP/IPsec).

    Click or tap Advanced settings.

    Ensure that Use certificate for authentication and Verify the Name and Usage attributes of the server's certificate are selected. Click or tap OK.

    Click or tap the Data encryption menu, then select Maximum strength encryption, then click or tap OK.

To configure the L2TP/IPsec connection:

  1. From the Desktop, Swipe to the left on far left side of the desktop (or point your mouse to the top-right corner) to access the Charms menu.
  2. Click or tap the Settings option.
  3. Click or tap Control Panel.
  4. Click or tap Network and Internet.
  5. Click or tap Network and Sharing Center.
  6. Click or tap Set up a new connection or network.
  7. Click or tap Connect to a workplace, then click or tap Next.
  8. Ensure that No, create a new connection is selected, then click or tap Next.
  9. Click or tap Use my Internet Connection (VPN).
  10. Enter the desired VPN server address in the Internet address field. View the server addresses here.

  11. In the Destination name field, type VyprVPN, then click or tap Create.
  12. Click or tap Network and Sharing Center to make that window active.
  13. Click or tap Change adapter settings on the left.
  14. Right-click (or long tap) the new VyprVPN connection and click or tap Properties.
  15. Enter your Windows RT Credentials if necessary for Admin privileges.
  16. Click or tap the Security tab in the VyprVPN Properties pop-up window.
  17. In the Type of VPN menu, select Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol with IPsec (L2TP/IPsec).
  18. Click or tap Advanced settings.
  19. Ensure that Use certificate for authentication and Verify the Name and Usage attributes of the server's certificate are selected. Click or tap OK.
  20. Click or tap the Data encryption menu, then select Maximum strength encryption, then click or tap OK.
  21. Close Network Connections window.

    Enter your Golden Frog Username and Password in their respective fields, then click or tap OK.

To Connect:

  1. Access the Settings Menu by pressing the Windows Key (two keys to the left of the Space Bar) and the i key at the same time
  2. Click or tap the Network Connections icon.
  3. Click or tap VyprVPN under Connections.
  4. Tap Connect.
  5. Enter your Golden Frog Username and Password in their respective fields, then click or tap OK.
  6. You are connected.

To Disconnect:

  1. Access the Settings Menu by pressing the Windows Key (two keys to the left of the Space Bar) and the i key at the same time.
  2. Click or tap the Network Connections icon.
  3. Click or tap the VPN connection, then click Disconnect.
