VyprVPN L2TP/IPsec VPN Setup for Windows 8

To add a necessary registry setting:

    Move the cursor to the lower right corner of the screen to access the Charms bar.

    In the search box that appears, type "regedit" and press Enter.

    You will be prompted to allow Administrator rights. Click Yes.

    In the left pane, locate and click the folder: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\PolicyAgent

    Click the Edit menu and hover your cursor over New.

    Click DWORD Value.

    A new registry will appear in the right pane, named New Value #1. Rename that file: "AssumeUDPEncapsulationContextOnSendRule" (this is case-sensitive and contains no spaces) and press ENTER.

    Right-click AssumeUDPEncapsulationContextOnSendRule, then click Modify.

    In the Value data box, type "2" and click OK.

  1. Move the cursor to the lower right corner of the screen to access the Charms bar.
  2. Click on the Search option in the bar.
  3. In the search box that appears, type "regedit" and press Enter.
    • You will be prompted to allow Administrator rights. Click Yes.
  4. In the left pane, locate and click the folder: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\PolicyAgent
  5. Click the Edit menu and hover your cursor over New. Click DWORD Value.
    • A new registry will appear in the right pane, named New Value #1.
  6. Rename that file: "AssumeUDPEncapsulationContextOnSendRule" (this is case-sensitive and contains no spaces) and press ENTER.
  7. Right-click AssumeUDPEncapsulationContextOnSendRule, then click Modify.
  8. In the Value data box, type "2" and click OK.
  9. Reboot the computer.

    Download the certificate and save it. Move the cursor to the lower right corner of the screen to access the Charms bar. In the search box that appears, type "mmc" and press Enter.

    You will be prompted to allow Administrator rights. Click Yes.

    Click the File menu then click Add/Remove Snap-in.... In the Available snap-ins list on the left, double-click Certificates.

    In the popup window, select Computer account and click Next.

    Click Finish.

    Press OK to close the Snap-ins window.

    In the center pane of the console window, double-click Certificates (Local Computer).

    Double-click Personal.

    Right click in the center pane, hover the cursor over All Tasks, then click Import...

    Click Next, then Browse... and locate the goldenfrog-client file downloaded earlier and click Open.

    Click Next.

    Type "goldenfrog" in the Password field, then click Next.

    Select Automatically select the certificate store based on the type of certificate and click Next.

    Click Finish.

Installation of the Goldenfrog Certificate requires administrative privileges on your computer.

  1. Download the certificate and save it.
  2. Move the cursor to the lower right corner of the screen to access the Charms bar.
  3. Click on the Search option in the bar.
  4. In the search box that appears, type "mmc" and press Enter.
    • You will be prompted to allow Administrator rights. Click Yes.
  5. Click the File menu then click Add/Remove Snap-in...
  6. In the Available snap-ins list on the left, double-click Certificates.
  7. In the popup window, select Computer account, click Next, then click Finish.
  8. Press OK to close the Snap-ins window.
  9. In the center pane of the console window, double-click Certificates (Local Computer).
  10. Double-click Personal.
  11. Right click in the center pane, hover the cursor over All Tasks, then click Import...
  12. Click Next, then Browse...
  13. Locate the goldenfrog-client file downloaded earlier and click Open.
  14. Click Next.
  15. Type "goldenfrog" in the Password field, then click Next.
  16. Select Automatically select the certificate store based on the type of certificate, click Next, then click Finish.
  17. Close the Console1 window.
  18. Click Yes to save Console1 settings.
  19. The default name is fine, click save again.

To configure the L2TP/IPsec connection:

  1. From the Desktop, right click on the network icon in the Windows toolbar.
  2. Click Open Network and Sharing Center.
  3. Click Set up a new connection or network.
  4. Click Connect to a workplace then Next.
  5. Ensure No, create a connection is selected. Click Next.
  6. Click Use my Internet Connection (VPN).
  7. Enter the desired VPN server address in the Internet address field. View the server addresses here.
  8. In the Destination name field, type a descriptive name, like VyprVPN.
  9. Click Create.
  10. Click Network and Sharing Center to make that window active.
  11. Click Change adapter settings on the left.
  12. Right-click your new connection and click Properties.
  13. Click the Security tab in the pop-up window.
  14. In the Type of VPN menu, select Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol with IPsec (L2TP/IPsec).
  15. Click Advanced settings.
  16. Ensure that Use certificate for authentication and Verify the Name and Usage attributes of the server's certificate are selected. Click OK.
  17. Click the Data encryption menu.
  18. Select Maximum strength encryption.
  19. Click OK.
  20. Close Network Connections window.

To Connect:

  1. Press Win + i (the Windows key and the letter "i" at the same time).
  2. Click the Network Icon at the bottom of the side pane that appears on the right.
  3. Click on your new connection, then click the Connect button.
  4. Type in your Golden Frog Login (e-mail address) and Password in their respective fields.
  5. Click OK.
  6. You can check your IP here: https://www.goldenfrog.website/whatismyipaddress

To Disconnect:

  1. Press Win + i (the Windows key and the letter "i" at the same time).
  2. Click the Network Icon at the bottom of the side pane that appears on the right.
  3. Click your VPN connection, then click Disconnect.
