VyprVPN L2TP/IPsec VPN Setup for OS X 10.5-10.7

 These instructions are written for Mac OS X 10.5-10.7 (Leopard, Snow Leopard and Lion). See the Mac OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion) L2TP/IPsec Instructions.

    First download and save the certificate.

    Press the Apple Key + Shift + U (Or navigate to the Utilities folder inside the Applications folder). Launch the Keychain Access application.

    In the Keychains section, click System. From the File menu, select Import, then select the downloaded certificate.

    Enter your computer's administrator username and password.

    For the certificate password, type "goldenfrog" (This is case sensitive and has no space).

    You will see two new certificates in the System Keychain. Double-click each certificate, click Trust, and change the drop-down to Always Trust.

    Go to System Preferences. Under Internet & Wireless, click Network. Click + (the plus icon). Select VPN for the interface, L2TP over IPSec for the VPN Type, and type a descriptive name for the Service Name. Click Create.

    Select the newly created VPN connection. Enter one of the host names from the VyprVPN servers list in the Server Address field. Then, type your Goldenfrog Login (e-mail address) in the Account Name field.

    Click Authentication Settings and enter your Golden Frog Password in the Password field. Under Machine Authentication, click the radial button for Certificate. Click the Select button and choose the Goldenfrog Client Certificate.

    Click Advanced, check Send all traffic over VPN connection, then click OK. Click Apply.

To install the certificate:

Installation of the Golden Frog Certificate requires administrative privileges on your computer.

  1. Download the certificate and save it.
  2. Press the Apple Key + Shift + U (Or navigate to the Utilities folder inside the Applications folder)
  3. Import the certificate
    • Open Keychain Access
    • In the Keychains section, click System
    • From the File menu, select Import, then select the certificate you downloaded. Enter your password, then for the certificate password, type "goldenfrog" (This is case-sensitive and has no space).
    • You will see two new certificates in the System Keychain. Double-click each certificate, click Trust, and change the drop-down to Always Trust

To configure the L2TP/IPSec connection:

  1. In System Preferences, click Network Settings
    • Click the Apple then click System Preferences
    • Under Internet & Wireless, click Network
  2. Click + (the plus icon)
  3. Select VPN for the interface, L2TP over IPSec for the VPN Type, and type a descriptive name for the Service Name
  4. Click Create
  5. Select the newly created VPN connection
  6. Enter one of the host names from the VyprVPN servers list in the Server Address field.
  7. Type your Golden Frog Login (e-mail address) in the Account Name field
  8. Click Authentication Settings
    • Enter your Golden Frog Password in the Password field
    • Under Machine Authentication, click the radio button for Certificate. Click the Select button and choose the client certificate
  9. Click Advanced, check Send all traffic over VPN connection, then click OK
  10. Click Apply

To connect:

  1. Click the VPN icon in the menu bar
  2. Click Connect to your new VPN connection

To disconnect:

  1. Click the VPN icon in the menu bar
  2. Click Disconnect from your new VPN connection
